Is the study of English Lit going to implode in the next quarter century?

Competition with Comm / Media Studies could lead English to: 1) Make our engagement with contemporary society more rigorous, or 2) Just cut the anchor connecting us to the world before 1900. If you ignore long-term consequences, (2) will look easier.
