I can't hear it in the way a medieval listener would, but I come across examples of the wider belief most days, its so central to medieval belief, its impossible to escape.
By chance here is this morning's example, which is an interesting example. It opens with a description of where you could expect to here such sound (the fairy mound), it also explains how the beauty of music will remain for all time, until its end.
I hear it as solemn. The "creepy" part, or interpretation as sadness? Not necessarily.
