Kids and Music 8: Sant Andreu Jazz Band [Born to Groove]

Sant Andreu Jazz Band is a youth jazz band from Barcelona, featuring 7- to 20-year-olds. The bandleader is Joan Chamorro.

The Sant Andrew Jazz Band is based inn Barcelona, Spain. Chamorro founded it in 2006 for youth between the ages of 7 and 20. They have toured Spain and neighboring countries and even the United States. They often have top-shelf jazz musicians perform with them at festivals.

Here is a festival performance from 2011:

Undecided

Sant Andreu Jazz Band ( 2011) Undecided & Jesse Davis & Wycliffe Gordon

Elsa Armengou trompeta
Wycliffe Gordon trombon
Jesse Davis saxo alto
Andrea Motis trompeta solo
Marc Martin piano solo

Notice the front line on the head. Two tall and somewhat overweight men flanking a young girl. The men are world-class musicians, Jesse Davis on alto and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone; the girl is Elsa Armangou, who must be 8 to 10 years old. That front line says it all: All of them belong there. Each has a part to play, and they play it.

Kids and Music

Kids and Music, la, Sant Andreu Jazz Band “IL DOCUMENTARIO”

This is a one hour documentary about the group. It is in Spanish. If you don’t speak Spanish – I don’t – that’s not a problem. You can see well enough what’s going on.

I’m going to present the rest of the clips without commentary. I’ve chosen them to represent a range of styles.

Si tu vois ma mere

“If you see my mother” is from the repertoire of Sidney Bechet (1897-1959) a pioneering New Orleans musician who spent a good deal of time in Europe. He also worked as a tailor.

  1. 'All of them belong there'

Also have the ability to express and communicate what they think openly and honestly regardless of differences in status/ skill or experience.

That freedom to express that is so shockingly absent in an academic setting and so vital to teaching/ learning/ performance in the arts.

University, just one long non-stop cultural shock.

Yes yes yes. Meanwhile students at Julliard are protesting over yet another hike in tuition. Apparently their practice rooms suck as well.

  2. The side effect of effective communication within the arts, from an institutional perspective its never going to result in a class filled with 'model students.'

The balancing act between uninhabited freedom to express, is vital, the arts are incompatible with social distance. Maintaining the space required, its never been stable. Constant tension.

That seemingly incompatible mix of ferocious individualism/ collective.

No less dysfunctional than other institutions, in many ways more brutal but it in terms of communication/ engagement, differences between the arts/ university are shocking.

    Different world.
