Adventures in photographing food

Looking through the photos on my computer I see that I first started photographing my meals at Hoboken’s Malibu Diner on January 20, 2018, a single photo of a dinner plate with a pork chop and some mashed potatoes. I took my second and third food photos in July of that year with two shots of a Reuben and fries. Then I picked up the pace.

I had no intentions of doing anything fancy, nothing like the photos in the restaurant reviews in The New York Times much less the photos you see in food advertisements. That requires control over lighting that I don’t have, not to mention a studio and even a food stylist (yes, that’s a real job). I was just having fun, photographing my world.

Of course I had to play around, experiment within the restricted compass of that small world. How close can I get? How about photographing a half-eaten burger while I’m holding it in my hand? Let’s get a low-angle shot of a waffle, coming in for a landing! Cream swirling around in my coffee.

Here are three shots I haven’t done before. Nothing fancy. Just a little new.
