Back when I was researching my book on music, Beethoven's Anvil, a family friend, Jon Barlow, arranged for me to sit in on a konnokol class taught by Ramnad V. Ragavan, a mridangam drummer, who was on the faculty at Wesleyan (pp. 124-125 in the book). Fascinating.
