Pope Leo and St. Augustine discuss the mind and A.I. with Kurt Gödel

I crafted the prompt and Claude drafted the dialog using a passage about memory from Augustine’s Confessions as the catalyst for the imaginary conversation. I asked for some changes, Claude made some suggestions, and I executed them.

Note this passage toward the end:

Gödel said, “Disordered love?”

“Yes. To love a lower thing as though it were higher. To love one’s own power more than truth. To love the image more than the living being. To love the tower more than the city.”

The reply is by Augustine and it amounts to a definition of idolatry. The tower, presumably, is the Tower of Babel.

ChatGPT created the image. I uploaded the full dialog and asked from an image based on the passage from Augustine’s Confessions. That began an iterative process resulting in the image immediately below. The dialog follows.

I want you to create an imaginary conversation between St. Augustine, Kurt Gödel, and Pope Leo XIV. It should take place in Gödel’s office at the Institute for Advanced Study. After the men introduce themselves – assume Augustine can understand and speak English, and perhaps wonder a bit how they became gathered together, Pope Leo leads off, saying that, while working on his recent encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, one of his colleagues pointed out a passage in Augustine’s Confessions (to follow) that resonated with Gödel’s proof of incompleteness. Given the role that arithmetic plays in Gödel’s proof we should note that Augustine wouldn’t have known about arithmetic. Nor, for that matter, would he have known about computers. He is likely to have known about sophisticated mechanical devices like the Antikythera Mechanism and the Sphere of Archimedes, but never have seen one. But he would have seen complex water clocks (clepsydrae).

Here’s the passage from the Confessions (Book Ten, Chapter VIII). Perhaps Leo reads it aloud.

Great is this power of memory, exceedingly great, O my God–a large and boundless inner hall! Who has plumbed the depths of it? Yet it is a power of my mind, and it belongs to my nature. But I do not myself grasp all that I am. Thus the mind is far too narrow to contain itself. But where can that part of it be which it does not contain? Is it outside and not in itself? How can it be, then, that the mind cannot grasp itself?

A great marvel rises in me; astonishment seizes me. Men go forth to marvel at the heights of mountains and the huge waves of the sea, the broad flow of the rivers, the vastness of the ocean, the orbits of the stars, and yet they neglect to marvel at themselves. Nor do they wonder how it is that, when I spoke of all these things, I was not looking at them with my eyes–and yet I could not have spoken about them had it not been that I was actually seeing within, in my memory, those mountains and waves and rivers and stars which I have seen, and that ocean which I believe in–and with the same vast spaces between them as when I saw them outside me. But when I saw them outside me, I did not take them into me by seeing them; and the things themselves are not inside me, but only their images. And yet I knew through which physical sense each experience had made an impression on me.

Perhaps sometime late in the conversation Albert Einstein might drop in to see what they were talking about.

The Mind Too Narrow to Contain Itself A conversation in Kurt Gödel’s office at the Institute for Advanced Study

Gödel’s office was narrow, orderly, and dim. Books stood in ranks along the wall, interrupted by folders, loose papers, and a blackboard covered with marks whose austerity made them seem less written than engraved. Outside the window the trees of Princeton trembled slightly in the wind. The afternoon light had the washed patience of late autumn.

Kurt Gödel stood beside his desk, thin and formal, dressed in a dark suit. He had the air of a man who had been expecting visitors and yet was not at all reassured by their arrival.

The first visitor was an African bishop in ancient dress, compact and alert, his face alive with inquiry. He looked about the room with frank astonishment, then settled his gaze on the blackboard.

The second was an elderly man in white, gentle but grave, wearing a small pectoral cross. His eyes moved from Augustine to Gödel and then to the papers on the desk.

“I believe,” the man in white said, “that introductions are in order.”

Gödel inclined his head. “Kurt Gödel. Institute for Advanced Study.”

The bishop smiled faintly. “A place for contemplation?”

“For research,” said Gödel.

“Then it may be the same thing, if rightly ordered. I am Augustine, bishop of Hippo.”

Gödel blinked once. “Yes. I had inferred as much.”

The man in white bowed slightly. “And I am Leo, servant of the servants of God.”

Augustine turned to him. “Bishop of Rome?”

“Yes.”

Augustine’s face softened. “Then I greet you as a brother, though I confess I do not understand how we have been gathered. This room is strange to me. These lamps burn without flame. These marks”—he gestured toward Gödel’s symbols—“are neither Greek nor Latin, though I suspect they are meant to compel the mind.”

“They are logical formulae,” Gödel said.

“Ah,” said Augustine. “Then they are meant not merely to persuade, but to bind.”

Leo smiled. “That is well put.”

Gödel gestured toward the chairs. “Please.”

They sat. Augustine examined the chair before trusting his weight to it. Leo remained composed, as though papal audiences in the offices of dead mathematicians were not wholly outside the bounds of pastoral duty.

Leo opened a folder.

“Professor Gödel, Saint Augustine, I will explain why I wished for this conversation, though the means by which it has been granted are beyond my competence. While I was working on my recent encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, one of my colleagues pointed out a passage from Augustine’s Confessions. It seemed to him to resonate with your incompleteness theorem.”

Gödel looked sharply interested.

Augustine looked from one to the other. “Incompleteness?”

“A result in mathematical logic,” said Gödel. “Roughly speaking, in any sufficiently strong formal system capable of expressing arithmetic, there will be true statements that cannot be proven within that system, assuming the system is consistent.”

Augustine was silent for a moment.

“You say: a structure of reasoning may contain truths that it cannot reach by its own lawful motions?”

Gödel’s expression altered, almost imperceptibly. “That is not an inaccurate first formulation.”

“But I must be careful,” Augustine continued. “You speak of arithmetic. I know number, of course. I know that three is not five, and that if two men enter a room where two already sit, there are four. I know arithmetic as number, measure, and reckoning. But you seem to speak of arithmetic as though it were also a mirror in which reasoning may behold its own form. That I do not know.”

Gödel nodded. “Exactly. The novelty is not number alone, but the coding of statements, proofs, and rules as numbers. Nor would you know the modern notion of a formal system: axioms, rules of inference, recursive procedures, symbolic codings of syntax.”

“I know rules,” said Augustine. “And I know the temptation to mistake the rule for the truth it serves.”

A Meeting of Minds on Mars: Charles Babbage • John von Neumann • Geoffrey Hinton

This discussion is about the implementation of computing in matter. That was the topic of John von Neumann’s last book, The Computer and the Brain. He died before he finished it, so it was published posthumously in 1958. I don’t know when I first learned about it, perhaps sometime in the mid-1970s. Though I knew about von Neumann and his role in early computing, it dismissed the book itself, figuring that we’d learned so much about the brain since then, and the nature of computers had changed so much, that it must be obsolete.

I was wrong. When I finally read the book, probably in the early to mid-1980s I was stunned. This was a profound book and free of mathematics beyond some simple back-of-the-envelope calculations. For one thing von Neumann talked of both analog and digital computation; that contrast was central. When I first started reading about computers in the mid-to-late 1960s that contrast was at the beginning of every article or book. But once personal computers appeared and proliferated in the late 1970s and 1980s, analog computing was all but forgotten.

It was good to see it back. For one thing, I had been strongly influenced by the work of William Powers, whose 1973 book, Behavior: The Control of Perception, offered an elegant analog model of the brain. That was central to the work of my teacher and mentor, David Hays, who had been one of the founders of computational linguistics. In 1974 and 1975 he worked out a scheme in which cognitive networks were grounded in Powers’s analog model. This was years before anyone else was working on the problem, before Steven Harnad coined the term, “symbol grounding” in his 1990 paper on the problem in Physica D.

Now, with the success of artificial neural networks, there’s another aspect of physical implementation we’ve got to deal with, distributed representation. You’re looking at an apple. Where is that apple represented in your brain? There might be some one neuron or a tightly clustered group of neurons that represent that apple. That’s a local representation. But the representation might be distributed across a loosely linked population of neurons. That’s a distributed representation. We now know that that’s how the brain works, though I assume there’s some laggards still stuck in the previous century where local representation was widely favored. And that’s how artificial neural nets work. The concept of apple isn’t localized in one or a small group of weights, it’s smeared over a population of weights. The same for the concepts of truth, beauty, and justice, or, for that matter, neuron.

Consequently von Neumann’s 1958 discussion must now be extended to distributed representation. It is for that purpose that I asked Claude to convene a conversation between Charles Babbage, who conceived of an elaborate mechanical computer in the 19th century, von Neumann himself, and Geoffrey Hinton, one of the so-called godfathers of artificial intelligence – a bit of journalistic and pop culture slight-of-hand that obscures a long and complex history. Moreover, since these three gentleman did not co-exist in time, though there’s a bit of overlap between von Neumann and Hinton, I decided that I might also have Claude transport them to Mars for the occasion. Anything is possible in virtual reality.

Mars. We're on Mars. I was at a conference in Toronto. But that sky, the dust, the sun at that distance — I'd stake my reputation on it. He exhales slowly. I've recently left a position at Google partly so I could speak freely about alarming possibilities. I did not anticipate that the alarming possibilities would include this. May I ask what year it is, from each of your perspectives?

Charles Babbage

The year of Our Lord 1862. I am Charles Babbage, formerly Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, Fellow of the Royal Society. I have spent the better part of forty years attempting to build mechanical calculating engines, with results that have been — a pause — mixed, as regards the support of Her Majesty's government.

John von Neumann

John von Neumann. The year is 1955. I work at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and consult for various government and military bodies. Mr. Babbage — I know your name extremely well. Better, I suspect, than you know mine.

Geoffrey Hinton

Geoffrey Hinton. For me it is 2024. And I know both of you — Mr. Babbage, you designed the Difference Engine and the Analytical Engine. Dr. von Neumann, you are among the most formidable mathematicians of the twentieth century and you gave your name to the architecture that every conventional computer on Earth is built upon. You are, in a real sense, my ancestors. The field I work in — machine learning, artificial intelligence — descends directly from the problems both of you were grappling with.

Charles Babbage

A long pause, during which he stares at Hinton with an expression mixing hunger, pride, and something close to grief. The Analytical Engine. Did anyone build it?

Geoffrey Hinton

Not in your lifetime. The government never provided the funds. But the ideas were entirely right — and they were eventually built, first in relay and vacuum tube and then in silicon, by people who in some cases had read your work and in other cases had arrived at the same conclusions independently. You were approximately a century early.

Charles Babbage

Very quietly. A century. I had hoped twenty years would suffice. I petitioned the Chancellor. Three times.

II. The mill and the store

John von Neumann

Mr. Babbage, allow me to tell you what your Analytical Engine set in motion — because it bears directly on the work that has occupied all three of us. You made a distinction, in your design, between what you called the Mill and the Store. The Mill performs the operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication. The Store holds the numbers awaiting operation and the results of operations completed. That separation of active calculation from passive memory was the foundational insight.

It seemed to me the only sensible arrangement. The columns of number-wheels in the Store are passive — they merely hold values. The Mill acts upon them. To mix the two functions in the same mechanism would create hopeless confusion.

John von Neumann

And yet it is precisely that separation which I have spent the last years of my life questioning — not as an engineering choice, which was entirely sound, but as a principle of intelligence itself. My colleagues and I formalized your Mill-and-Store distinction into what is now called the stored-program architecture. The processor executes instructions sequentially; the memory holds both data and those instructions passively until called upon. It is a serial machine, one operation following another, orchestrated by a central clock. The computers being built in my era all follow this pattern.

Geoffrey Hinton

And in my era they still do, at bottom. But you've just described the tension at the heart of everything, Dr. von Neumann. Serial, precise, with a strict wall between computation and memory — that is the von Neumann architecture. And it is, in a sense, the architecture that human intelligence refuses to use.

Charles Babbage

You are saying the brain does not separate Mill from Store?

Geoffrey Hinton

Exactly. In the brain, every neuron is simultaneously a memory element and a processing element. It holds information in the strength of its connections to other neurons, and it also fires — it computes — based on what it receives. There is no central Mill. There is no passive Store. Computation and memory are fused at every node in the network, and the whole thing operates in parallel, millions of neurons active at once.

John von Neumann

This is precisely what troubles me — and I am glad to find the trouble is still alive in your era, Mr. Hinton, because it means I was not merely chasing a phantom. I have been writing a manuscript, unfinished I'm afraid, called "The Computer and the Brain." My central puzzle is this: where, in a neuron, is the Mill? A neuron receives signals, sums them, and if the sum exceeds a threshold, it fires. That threshold operation is a computation. But the synaptic weights — the strengths of the incoming connections — those are also the memory. The neuron is its own Mill and its own Store simultaneously. I have been calling such things active elements, to distinguish them from the passive memory elements of our conventional machines. But I confess I have not yet worked out the full implications.

Geoffrey Hinton

With genuine feeling. Dr. von Neumann, the full implications are what I have spent my career working out. And you had named the essential thing: active elements. That is exactly what the nodes of a neural network are. Each one holds a weight — that is its memory — and each one applies a non-linear function to its inputs — that is its computation. Fused. Inseparable. Replicated millions or billions of times, connected in layers, and trained by adjusting all those weights simultaneously until the network's outputs match the desired answers.

Meeting of Minds: Richard F. Burton, Thor Heyerdahl, Marco Polo, and a Surprise Guest

Before I give you the conversation I cooked up with the help of Claude 3.5, let me explain roughly how things went. Once Claude learned that I wanted it to tell a story of some kind, it split the screen in two vertically.

  1. I gave Claude a prompt. [Left panel]
  2. Claude briefly told me what it would do. [Left panel]
  3. I then produced some dialog. [Right panel]
  4. Claude told me what it had done and gave me suggestions about how to proceed. [Left panel]
  5. I told Claude how to proceed. [Left panel]

And the process repeated. This happened five times. On the fifth time I told it what to do next and requested that it end the dialog with this segment. When it was done I congratulated it and made some final remarks

I’m not going to attempt all that back and forth in the dialog below. I start out with my initial prompt, then I present the entire dialog without interruption. Note, however, that I have inserted subtitles at the point where Claude and I had a discussion about how to proceed. I conclude with Claude’s final remarks.

I want you to stage an imaginary dialog between three famous explorers: Richard Francis Burton, Thor Heyerdahl, and Marco Polo. Let’s imagine they’re all transported to the bar in the Explorer’s Club in Manhattan, where they have a few drinks and chat. There’s also a television in the room, but it’s not turned on when the conversation begins. Heyerdahl begins the conversation by introducing himself and explaining to the other two where they are and how they got there (time travel). Of course Marco Polo wouldn’t even have known that America exists. Burton would have known. Once introduced each tells of their most dangerous expedition.

1. The story begins

[The wood-paneled bar of the Explorer’s Club in Manhattan. Three men find themselves seated at a corner table, surrounded by mounted exotic animal heads and artifacts from around the world. A bartender quietly polishes glasses in the background.]

THOR HEYERDAHL: [adjusting his bow tie] Gentlemen, I realize this is rather startling, but allow me to explain. I’m Thor Heyerdahl, and through some inexplicable circumstance, we’ve all been transported to what’s known as the Explorer’s Club in Manhattan, New York. The year is - well, sometime in the 21st century. [gestures to the room] This is a gathering place for adventurers and explorers, founded in 1904.

MARCO POLO: [looking bewildered] Manhattan? New York? These words mean nothing to me. I am Marco Polo of Venice, and the last I remember, I was dictating my travels to Rustichello da Pisa in my prison cell in Genoa.

RICHARD BURTON: [sipping from a glass of whiskey] Fascinating. Sir Richard Francis Burton at your service. I’m quite familiar with New York, though I must say the city has changed considerably since my time. [to Polo] My good man, you’re sitting in a city on a continent that wouldn’t be known to Europeans until nearly two centuries after your death.

HEYERDAHL: [signaling to the bartender] Perhaps some drinks will help ease the shock. Now, since we’re all here, we might as well share stories. I’ll begin - my most perilous journey was arguably the Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947. Picture this: a balsa wood raft, 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean, just to prove that ancient South Americans could have reached Polynesia.

BURTON: [leaning forward with interest] A worthy endeavor! Though I must say, my journey to Mecca in disguise as Sheikh Abdullah in 1853 carried perhaps even greater risk. One wrong move, one slip in my portrayal, and I would have been executed on the spot for being an infidel.

POLO: [taking a sip of wine] Executed? I understand such dangers well. During my journey to Cathay - what you would call China - we crossed the Gobi Desert. For days we heard what we thought were voices calling our names, evil spirits trying to lead us astray into the wastes. Many who wander off following these voices are never seen again.

BURTON: [skeptically] Come now, Polo. Surely you don’t expect us to believe in desert spirits?

HEYERDAHL: [diplomatically] Whether spirits or hallucinations from dehydration, the danger was real enough. [glances at strange black box on the wall] I say, that’s what we call a television. It can show images from around the world. Shall we turn it on? It might help demonstrate to Messer Polo just how much the world has changed.

POLO: [eyeing the television warily] More sorcery? In my travels I saw many wonders - paper money, burning black stones, even messages carried by pigeons across vast distances. But this...

BURTON: [chuckling] My dear Polo, you should have seen the skepticism I faced when I published your accounts in English. Many called you a liar or a braggart. Yet here we sit, centuries later, knowing you spoke truth about China’s wonders.

HEYERDAHL: [raising his glass] To vindication! My own theories about Pacific migration were mocked by the academic establishment. They said it was impossible to cross the Pacific on a primitive raft. Well, we showed them, didn’t we?

POLO: [curiously] You crossed an ocean larger than the entire realm of Kublai Khan... on a raft made of grass?

BURTON: Balsa wood, Polo. Though I must say, I prefer a well-appointed expedition. My search for the source of the Nile had 200 porters carrying everything from silver tea services to a folding boat.

HEYERDAHL: [laughing] Times have changed indeed. Though I suspect all of us share one thing - the desire to prove what others claimed impossible.

POLO: [nodding] True enough. When I returned to Venice after 24 years away, my own family didn’t recognize me. They thought me long dead. Even after I proved who I was, many refused to believe my tales of paper money and vast cities in Cathay.

BURTON: [raising his glass] To the unbelievers then - without whom we might never have felt so compelled to prove our points. Though I must say, Heyerdahl, your raft journey makes my disguised pilgrimages seem rather comfortable in comparison.

HEYERDAHL: [modestly] We all faced the challenges of our times. [gestures to television] Shall we see what modern explorers are up to?

2. Raiders of the Lost Ark

[The television suddenly comes to life, showing Raiders of the Lost Ark. The opening scene plays as Indiana Jones navigates the Peruvian temple.]

POLO: [startled by the moving images] By Saint Mark! What sorcery is this? The people are so small, yet they move as if alive!

BURTON: [fascinated] Remarkable. The quality of these moving photographs far exceeds anything Edison was working on in my time.

HEYERDAHL: [grinning] This is what we call a movie - “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” It’s about a fictional archaeologist named Indiana Jones. [gestures to the screen] He’s searching for ancient artifacts, much as we all did in our own ways.

BURTON: [watching Jones swing across a chasm] Rather acrobatic for an archaeologist, wouldn’t you say?

POLO: [wincing as Jones triggers a trap] In my travels through the temples of the East, I never encountered such elaborate mechanical devices. Though... [thoughtfully] there was that one Buddhist monastery in Tibet with rather ingenious defensive mechanisms...

HEYERDAHL: [as the giant boulder scene plays] Pure Hollywood invention, of course. Though I must say, during my excavations on Easter Island, we did have to be extremely careful about cave-ins.

BURTON: [snorting as Indy escapes] If my porters had abandoned me like his just did, I’d have had them flogged. Good help was essential in the exploration business.

POLO: [as Belloq appears] Ah, now this I understand - rival merchants seeking the same prize. Though in my day, we were more concerned with silk and spices than golden idols.

HEYERDAHL: Wait until you see what they’re really after - the Ark of the Covenant itself.

BURTON: [nearly choking on his whiskey] The Ark? From the Temple in Jerusalem? Preposterous! I’ve studied enough religious artifacts to know...

POLO: [interrupting as the Nazi villains appear on screen] Who are these men in matching black uniforms?

HEYERDAHL: [grimly] That’s a rather long and unpleasant story from my time period. Let’s just say they’re the villains.

BURTON: [watching the map room scene] Now this interests me - using ancient astronomical alignments to locate a buried site. During my expeditions to find the source of the Nile, we often relied on local astronomical knowledge. Though I never had a staff quite that elaborate...

POLO: [as Marion appears] At least they show the truth that women can be as fierce as men. I met many such women in Mongolia. Though they typically wore more practical clothing for combat.

HEYERDAHL: [chuckling] Just wait until you see what happens in the snake pit...

Meeting of Minds: Elizabeth I, Jane Austen, Jackie Kennedy

It’s time for another MEETING OF MINDS, based, of course, on Steve Allen’s old TV show, Meeting of Minds. This is where Claude 3.5 gets to enact a conversation between three people who never, in fact, could possibly have met in real life. We kicked off the series with an old time good one, as Satchmo used to say, three [robots] walked into a bar, in this case, Robbie, HAL, and C3PO. Then I decided that we had to get real, so I staged a meeting between Archimedes, Goethe, and Musk.

Now it’s time to get even more real, with a conversation between three powerful women, Queen Elizabeth I of England, Jane Austen, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. This conversation developed in stages. I gave Claude 3.5 Sonata a prompt, a rather long one, and then it got back to me. Claude would chatter on for a bit, then stop and ask me what I wanted to do next. I tell them and off we’d go again.

A Meeting of Minds: Three Women of Influence

Setting: The drawing room of Jane Austen's home in Chawton, Hampshire, during the Regency period. The room is modestly furnished but comfortable, with a writing desk by the window. Jane Austen is serving tea to her distinguished guests: Queen Elizabeth I and Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

JANE AUSTEN: (arranging tea cups) Your Majesty, Mrs. Onassis, I cannot express what an honor it is to host you both in my humble home. I must confess, I find it fascinating that we three have such different experiences with marriage – or the lack thereof.

ELIZABETH I: (with characteristic directness) Indeed, Miss Austen. I see you, like myself, chose to remain unmarried. Though I suspect your reasons differ from my own.

JACKIE KENNEDY: (elegantly stirring her tea) And I married twice – though neither marriage was quite what the public imagined. I've always been intrigued, Your Majesty, by your famous speech about being "married to England." Was that truly your feeling, or merely skilled political rhetoric?

ELIZABETH I: Both, Mrs. Kennedy, as any woman in power must understand. When I told Parliament I was "already bound unto an husband, which is the kingdom of England," I spoke truth. Yet I also spoke strategy. You both understand, I think, how men seek to control women through marriage.

JANE AUSTEN: (wryly) In my novels, I try to show that marriage should be a matter of both affection and prudence. Yet I've observed that even the happiest marriage requires a woman to surrender much of her independence.

JACKIE: (thoughtfully) Independence... yes. Even as First Lady, I fought to maintain some measure of privacy, of self. The public eye can be its own form of cage, whether you're a queen, a president's wife, or a celebrated author.

ELIZABETH I: (leaning forward intently) Precisely. Miss Austen, you shield yourself through your wit and irony. Mrs. Kennedy, you created your mystique through careful control of your public image. And I – I wielded my unmarried state as both sword and shield.

ELIZABETH I: Yet your wit was as sharp as any sword, Miss Austen. "For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?" You wrote that, did you not? I would have enjoyed such honest observations at my court.

JACKIE: (smiling) I tried to read Pride and Prejudice to Caroline when she was young. I wanted her to understand that a woman could be both strong-minded and feminine. Though I suspect Elizabeth Bennet might have found the White House as confining as I sometimes did.

JANE AUSTEN: (with a hint of mischief) Not all prisons have visible bars, do they? Your Majesty rejected marriage to keep your power, Mrs. Kennedy married into power but found it a gilded cage, and I... well, I chose a different kind of freedom altogether.

Meeting of Minds: Archimedes, Goethe, Musk

This is an edited version of an interaction I had with Claude 3.5 Sonata in which I asked it to present a conversation between Archimedes, Goethe, and Musk. These three could never have had such a conversation, of course, because they lived at different times, not to mention in different places. I got the idea from Steve Allen, who had a television show based on that concept. He called the show, Meeting of Minds.

I started the conversation with a prompt. Claude’s initial response was to imagine the possibilities. When they were done imagining, I told them to get on with it. Every so often I’d intervene with a comment. I’ve removed those. At one point Claude had Archimedes talking about gravity. When I pointed that out, Claude laughed (that is, responded with “laughing heartily”), noted that he wouldn’t have known about gravity, and revised the offending response. I edited that out as well. Here’s the final result.

One particularly interesting moment might come when discussing Mars colonization. Archimedes might see it as a brilliant application of his principles of mechanics and mathematics, while Goethe might view it through the lens of his concept of human striving toward the infinite. Both might be fascinated by, but perhaps also wary of, Musk’s ambitious timeline and goals.

Musk: checking his phone briefly before pocketing it “Elon Musk. I run SpaceX, Tesla... pausing Actually, Archimedes, you’d probably be interested in our Starship project. We’re basically building the largest lever ever made - a rocket that can lift 100 tons into orbit.”

Archimedes: eyes lighting up “Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the world! But you’ve found a way to move beyond it entirely? reaching for another napkin Show me your fuel calculations.”

Goethe: leaning forward with interest “Herr Musk, before you lose our Syracuse friend entirely to rocket equations, perhaps you could explain something that’s been puzzling me. In my ‘Faust,’ I explored humanity’s endless striving for knowledge and progress. Your ventures seem to embody this spirit, but at what cost to the human soul?”

Musk: shifting in his chair “The human soul? Look, we’re at a crucial point in civilization. We need to become multiplanetary before some catastrophe wipes us out. And AI is advancing faster than most people realize. These aren’t just engineering problems.”

So, I gave Claude the following prompt:
