The Oaks 1

These are among my earliest photos of graffiti. They're from an area known locally as "the oaks." It's just below the Jersey Palisades and about a half-mile or so from the downtown entrance to the Holland Tunnel. The graffiti is painted on the support stanchions for the 12th and 14th Street viaducts.

Notice how this ZAR ONE piece has been 'gone over' by other writers. It's maybe 6 or 7 feet high and 15 to 18 feet wide. This area used to be a freight yard, but the tracks were ripped out long ago.

As you can see, it was raining — those spot are water drops on the camera lens. That piece is gone, burned out when some homeless men decided to set fire to one another's possessions.

Notice all the pock marks on the wall from paint-ball battles.
